Physicals for Children and Adults
Physical exams are an important part of preventative medicine. Physicals are often required for participation by your children’s sports teams and for summer camps. Schools sometimes require physicals for attendance. And, if you drive a commercial vehicle, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) requires examination by a doctor every 24 months to maintain your commercial driver’s license. The Franklin Clinic provides physical exams for all of these purposes.
Parents sometimes consider the physicals that sports teams and summer camps require to be a nuisance. But, having your child undergo a medical examination is a good way to evaluate underlying health issues that may not otherwise be addressed. It is also a good time to determine whether a child is up-to-date on immunizations required for school attendance. Even when an exam is not required, and you feel healthy, there are many benefits of an annual physical. During these visits, your family physician will:
- Screen for diseases
- Assess your risk for future medical problems
- Update immunizations (limited)
- And strengthen the relationship with your primary care provider, so you will receive appropriate care in the case of a future illness
A physical exam sometimes identifies serious medical problems that the patient is not aware of. For example, most people who have high blood pressure do not know it, yet high blood pressure significantly increases one’s risk of heart disease and stroke. High blood sugar and cholesterol levels also are not usually perceived by a patient because these medical problems have no symptoms until they are in an advanced stage.
As part of preventative medical care, women should have regular pelvic exams and pap smears, while men should have prostate cancer screenings. Depending upon family history, the doctor may also recommend osteoporosis screenings and colon cancer screenings at some interval. Contact the Franklin Clinic to schedule a physical exam for yourself and your family members now.
